I cannot begin to describe how disturbed and nauseous the news has made me feel lately. Countless suicides brought upon by bullying – specifically those being bullied and ridiculed because of their sexual orientation. No one should ever feel so badly about who they are, and no one should ever have to think twice about whether or not the decisions they make in life offend or bother others. No life should be senselessly cut this short. No one should contribute to this type of behavior – stop bullying others.
Everyone knows the scenario. When you are young, the most important thing to you while you are a student is not academics – it is trying to be popular, finding your niche, and wanting to discover who you are. Ask anyone. We all want to believe we are important to someone.
What are we doing? Why are we letting these children commit suicide? Why are we allowing others to continue what they are doing? How come this goes unnoticed? Being a student, whether in elementary school, junior high, high school, or college is an extremely difficult situation to begin with! Why add extra stress? Why are there so many people relentlessly spreading hate toward others? It is not right. You can never be 100% sure how someone’s life is, and you if they are already experiencing difficult times (going through a breakup, a divorce in the family, deaths) – do you want to add on to the pile of unhappiness? Would you want someone to place you in that situation?
When I was in high school, I know for a fact that there were people I was surrounded by being ridiculed by their sexual orientation. Did it bother me? Absolutely. Did I do anything about it? You know that I did. Although high school had the ability to turn into a very dark, very scary place – I tried to make the best of every situation. I am a tolerant person. I always try to see the good in most people, and I am accepting of different beliefs. If we are unable to open our minds and understand other people, how can we ever hope for things to get better?
